Fifth Grade Art Program
Here is just one art lesson from the fifth grade art curriculum;
Pablo Picasso. He is an artist studied often due to his originality and inspiring work. His Cubist style is incorporated into the art lessons in the fifth grade especially. The students create an auto-biography that includes images of all of their interests, hobbies, sports, heritage, favorite subjects in school, favorite foods, etc. via drawing. They then 'cube' the images to create the look similar to what Picasso might have done if he were to develop an auto-biography without sentence form.
Portrait of Dora Maar by Picasso 1937
This photo is an example of Picasso's work in the Cubism style in which the students studied before creating their auto-biography. This is a portrait of his wife, whom he believed was beautiful, which contradicts what most viewers reaction would be looking at this work. Knowing his inspiration and motivation, it is the color choices and position of her that tells you he completed this work with reflecting her beauty in mind.
Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso (25 October 1881 – 8 April 1973) was a Spanish painter and sculptor. Wow, what a long name! He is one of the most recognized figures in 20th-century art. He is best known for co-founding the Cubist movement and for the wide variety of styles embodied in his work.
Picasso demonstrated uncanny artistic talent in his early years, painting in a realistic manner through his childhood and adolescence; during the first decade of the twentieth century his style changed as he experimented with different theories, techniques, and ideas. Picasso’s creativity manifested itself in numerous mediums, including painting, sculpture, drawing, and architecture. His revolutionary artistic accomplishments brought him universal renown and immense fortunes throughout his life, making him the best-known figure in twentieth century art.

Papier Mache Puppet Sculptures and Clay Sculptures
The other art lessons during the fifth grade school year involve working in sculpture. The students build a hand held puppet out of recycled "trash" that ends up to be an awesome, useable puppet to tell stories with, present puppet shows and even help them present class reports. They create a character along with a costume that covers their entire hand and forearm, all through their own artistic development.
Clay sculpting is always a favorite among the students and this year was no exception. They were fantastic! Their clay characters are fired in the kiln, glazed and fired again and then taken home to be cherished forever. We all hope. ;)
