Kent City Elementary Art Program with Ms. Mary Clare Johnson
(formerly Mrs. Christiansen)
About our Art teacher from 1985 to 2010;
Now back in the Art program from 2017 on...
Ms. Johnson has been teaching Art for over 25 years. This means that she has taught the parents of the students she has in her classroom now. After all these years; still loving it, still enthusiastic, still wanting to teach more! She believes all children can use their creative juices to foster enjoyment of life and school and increase their learning capacity in all subjects. Now that she is teaching in the 4th grade classroom and out of the Art program, she is still teaching area kids that are the next generation of learners.
Mary Clare is an accomplished professional artist in her own right. Her work has been featured in the Grand Rapids Art Museum, the Muskegon Museum of Art, in the Michigan Education Association headquarters, many art shows, competitions, exhibits, on internet sites and in art galleries. During one of the years her work was displayed in the Grand Rapids Art Museum, Pablo Picasso's original artwork was hanging on the opposite side of the wall in the next gallery! That was most definitely a highlight of excitement for her.
Another exciting honor was bestowed upon her when she was awarded Kent County Teacher of the Year in 2007-2008 for a teacher of multiple aged students.
Some of her own work is featured below and some samples of student work is featured on the following pages. She works in many mediums to keep her interest, to stay up on what should be experienced by her students and simply because she loves art in its entirety.
Art celebrates all aspects of life!
